Work-package 5 Irradiance

Summary

Work-package 5 concentrates on the measurement and the modelling of the solar spectral variability in spectral bands that are of particular importance for solar-terrestrial studies and for space weather applications: total solar irradiance, and irradiance in the ultraviolet. The focus is on the variability rather than on the analysis of spatial structures.

Objectives

This WP focuses on downstream research on the Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) and on the solar spectral irradiance in the ultraviolet (UV, from 10-300 nm), both of which are key inputs for the terrestrial upper atmosphere. The objective is to foster the exploitation of scattered observations from ground and space instruments and thereby improve the scientific understanding needed for developing products that are tailored to user needs.

Deliverables

1. Online flare prediction model

2. Peer-reviewed scientific publications

3. Online nowcast of the VUV spectrum

4. Nowcast of the middle atmosphere

5. Intercalibration of TSI/VUV measurements
