November

Meeting of the WP3 Work-Group on CME-flare relationship

Participants:

  • OBSPARIS: Lidia van Driel-Gesztelyi, Tibor Török
  • UNIGRAZ: Astrid Veronig, Manuela Temmer
  • HVAR: Bojan Vrsnak, Tomislav Zic

The Work Group was established and the agenda of this 1st meeting was prepared by e-mailing through September/October 2009. The central topics were: a) initiation of the CME/flare process; b) relationship between the energy release in flares and CME dynamics; c) evolution of current systems and magnetic structure during the CME pre-eruption stage and the acceleration phase.

Approach: a) combining the multiwavelength observations of selected events with 3D MHD simulations; b) parametric study of characteristics of eruption through 3D MHD modeling.

The studied events were selected from the WP4 list in order to enhance the collaboration between WP3 and WP4. In particular we analyzed in detail the events of 25 July 2004 and 6 July 2006. In addition, we discussed some aspects of the event of 19 May 2007 (e.g., relationship between the magnetic flux in coronal dimming regions and the related magnetic cloud). In the case of the 25 July 2004 we focused on the observational aspect, since it was concluded that the actual magnetic field configuration and its evolution were too complex to be reproduced by MHD modeling. We made progress with understanding/interpreting the triggering of different phases of this complex eruption and transequatorial loop disappearance and reformation. In the case of 6 July 2006 we started building an MHD model of the eruptive configuration based on observations. In particular, we considered the effects of the strongly rotating leading-polarity spot in triggering the eruption of the nearby flux-rope. Furthermore, we started working on the formation of unusual coronal dimming region, characterized by by very sharp expanding bright edges.
