Cassis, Europlanet and Helio (EC-funded projects)

Cassis is a new FP7 project committed to the formation of a link and a synergy of methodologies and results among Helio, Soteria and Europlanet. A member of Helio (Gallagher) is member of the Soteria Advisory Board and several Soteria beneficiaries (KU Leuven, ROB, CNRS, Obsparis, ...) are involved directly or indirectly with Cassis and Helio.

Ongoing shared efforts

Discussions have been initiated on the common need for a virtual observatory. Within WP6 of Soteria a virtual observatory based on the US system virtual solar observatory is ongoing. But time-overlap permitting a later link with the Helio solar observatory is planned.

Proposed hooks with Helio (please add your suggestions here)

The following Soteria activities can be considered for further discussion:

WP6 D6.8 (Online event and feature database): ROB and UNIGRAZ had a meeting in Trieste with people from HELIO (host: Mauro Messerotti); We had fruitful discussions about building an online event catalogue and got helpful instructions and technical support. SOTERIA will contribute to HELIO by providing databases.

Interoperability

Considering data formats and metadata in coordination with the other projects

Proposed hooks with Europlanet(please add your suggestions here)

NOAA (USA)

Discussions are ongoing on the evaluation of Soteria-developed tools for space weather forecasting (for example the data assimilation effort for solar wind modelling) in the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

NASA (USA)

MMS

An active collaboration is in place between the beneficiary KU Leuven and the University of Colorado on the simulation of reconnection in the Earth space environment with application to Soteria and to the NASA Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS).

CCMC

The NASA Community Coordinated Modelling Center is actively used by Soteria, most notably by beneficiaries DTU and KU Leuven, to study CME and flare initiation and CME expansion and interaction with the Earth environment. Furthermore CCMC provides a key testbed to compare the new data assimilation-based tools for solar wind prediction. The director of the CCMC is a member of the Soteria Advisory Board.
