Minutes of WP3 Kick-Off Meeting at ESWW5, Brussels, 17 November 2008, 11-13:00 LT Compiled by Volker Bothmer

WP3 – Chromosphere and Corona The WP3 KO meeting took place on Monday, November 17, 11-13:00 LT during the 5th European Space Weather Week in Brussels in the Audiovisual Room. Since it was directly following the WP1 summary by Giovanni Lapenta, it was attended by all SOTERIA members present on the Monday morning and the EU project officer (PO). Prior to the WP3 KO meeting, all participating institutions have provided first reports on the project status. A brief summary of work plans, science objectives and deliverables has been distributed amongst the participating institutions. UNI GRAZ was represented by Astrid Veronique and Wolfgang Otruba, OBSPARIS by Jean Aboudarham, Dan Seaton apologized for having another appointment in parallel.

The WP3 KO meeting started with a summary of the 8 WP3 participating institutions from 7 European countries, including Russia. The institutions, appointed local WP3 PIs, deliverables and due dates are: 1) KU Leuven, Belgium - Marina Skender – Initiation of Flares And CMEs - October 10 2) UNI GRAZ, Austria - Manuela Temmer – High cadence H-alpha and CaK data - April 11 3) ROB, Belgium - Dan Seaton; Frederic Clette – Proba 2 SWAP & LYRA database, H-alpha offered optionally by FC – April 11 4) OBSPARIS, France -Guillaume Molodij 5) SRC-PAS, Poland - Janusz Sylvester - SphinX database – April 11 6) UGOE, Germany – Volker Bothmer – 3D CME structure and evolution – February 10; STEREO database - April 11 7) HVAR, Croatia - Bojan Vrsnak 8) LPI, Russia - Vladimir Slemzin – Energy release through flares and CMEs – October 09; SPIRIT/TESIS database – April 11 Following a summary of the basic WP3 facts, the main science objectives of WP3 were reviewed, including the stressing of major science topic interfaces to other WPs: • Understand the onset mechanisms of CMEs and flares and their energy disposable into the corona (heating) and solar wind – IF WP2, WP4 • Understand the kinematics of CMEs and impact on the global corona with emphasis on the excitation of large-scale coronal waves and acceleration of particles - IF WP2, WP4 • Remote sensing of the plasma and magnetic field structure of the solar corona by means of wave diagnostic tools (large-scale coronal seismology) - IF WP2, WP4 • Understand the 3D structure of CMEs and evolution into the heliosphere - IF4 WP4 • Quantify the energy input to geo-space from flare and CME models, including heliospheric stream interactions - IF WP2, WP4 Bojan Vrsnak (HVAR) offered a strong contribution of modeling efforts concerning the evolution of CMEs/CIRs into the heliosphere and to Earth’s orbit. Frederic Clette (ROB) and Jean Aboudarham offered the contribution of ground-based H-alpha and CaIIK data. Dissemination of the databases will be worked out in close collaboration with the WP6 efforts led by David Berghmans (ROB). Several individual conversations during the following days initiated the start of joint studies. Since a prime goal of the WP3 objectives is to understand better the chain of processes from the Sun’s corona (and photosphere) to Earth’s orbit, including quantification of the physical parameters from the Sun to 1 AU, it is suggested (VB) to identify a set of prototype (HSS; CIRs, CMEs, flares, EUV waves, etc.) that facilitate joint studies and interdisciplinary work with WP2 and WP4 teams. The event list can be extended with new events from STEREO that also allow testing of current models.

Action items: - Establish a prototype event list – February 09 – all institutions
