A brief summary of the status

WP6 has worked on the logistical aspects of exchange of information at three levels:

  • exchange of documentation between the SOTERIA partners and the wider scientific community.

Unlike other scientific communities, the space weather community did not have yet an online document repository where technical information can be hosted. With SOTERIA, and thanks to the technical help from http://www.spaceweather.eu, we have been able to complete an online document repository (see A1D6.1 for details). We believe such an online repository can be significant help for the space weather community to aid the broad distribution of non-publishable research results such as technical reports, instrument descriptions, presentations and reference documents.

  • exchange of data between the SOTERIA partners and the wider scientific community

Within the consortium we strongly believe in an open data policy: science flourishes best when all scientists enjoy maximal, free access to high quality data. All the data produced within the present consortium will therefore be freely available to the international science community. We have studied and reached a conclusion on how to implement this through Virtual Observatory technology. We will build upon the best existing VO technology (VSO) and extend it with the insights and standards developed in an FP7 EU sister project (HELIO). See A1D6.2 for details.

  • exchange of results & insights towards young scientists and the society as a whole

The efficient exploitation of space weather data archives requires also training of researchers, especially young post-docs, to teach them how to use the new technical possibilities. These teaching will take the form of a workshop/summer school. We have come to a conclusion and agreement where these summer school will be organized (see A1D6.6 for details). Finally, we want to communicate our results to the European general public through outreach activities. Also here we made good progress (see A1D6.9 for details)

Major inter-beneficiary collaborations

  • The requirements and early developments of the document repository were discussed in the full SOTERIA group (Lapland meeting).
  • Several intern-beneficiary discussions (1 day meetings, e-mails exchanges) where organized between ROB, OBSPARIS and UNIGRAZ on the options for the Virtual Obseravtory infrastructure.
  • The progress/delays of the PROBA2 launch preparation and its implication on deliverables A1D6.4 and A1D6.5 is discussed within the SWAP and LYRA science consortium of which CNRS and PMOD-WRC are active members.

Major problems

  • The strategy in the proposal was to build upon  existing Virtual Observatory (VO) technology in solar  physics.  The various existing VOs were  contacted for knowhow on technical aspects.  Unfortunately it seemed that none of them can provide us sufficient support/documentation, resulting in a delay on our VO implementation. See deliverable A1D6.3 for details.
  • PROBA2 had a launch delay. It is currently scheduled for November 2009.

Minor problems

Following the start of the SOTERIA project (Nov 2008), ROB had a few months delay in hiring a co-worker with an adequate IT profile.

Suggestions for new directions and improvements

  • We will solve the above delay in setting up the Virtual Observatory by two lines of attack: On a short time-scale we will collect & build in‐house expertise on the US‐based [VSO] system. On a slower timescale we will extend this system with the developments from the FP7 funded project “HELIO” (coordinator Bob Bentley) which started spring 2009. See deliverable A1D6.3 for details.
