Goal
A workshop was foreseen in the proposal consisting of typically two weeks of intensive training (lectures + hands on sessions) for young European scientists. The objectives are (1) to acquire easy access to knowledge, people and databases, and (2) to federate a community, since such workshops can create lasting bands. The workshop will focus on exploitation of the yet unused space weather data available in archives.
Since the proposal we have concluded that instead of setting up a SOTERIA specific workshop, it is more opportune to have actually two workshops, one concentrating on general space weather science, and the other workshop towards the end of the SOTERIA lifetime and concentrating on the specific SOTERIA results and software tools. Moreover, we concluded that, in order to avoid overlaps, increase visibility it is a more efficient use of the SOTERIA funds to co-organize these events in collaborations with other international space weather organizations.
This evolution of the concept remains completely in-line with the spirit of the proposal but is now better embedded in the space weather community. Note that this will also mean that the deliverable cannot be completely closed till the end of the second workshop.
Progress so far
Most of the progress below resulted from discussions between Thierry Dudok de Wit (CNRS), Giovanni Lapenta (KULeuven) and David Berghmans (ROB)
Given the above described evolution, we have started the organization of the following two events:
International Advanced School on Space Weather Modeling and Applications
- co-organized with EC COST Action ES0803 (Anna Belehaki, Mauro Messorotti) and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Sandro Radicella). Giovanni Lapenta (SOTERIA PI) is co-director of the school.
- co-funded: 30 keuro confirmed by ICTP, 30 keuro to be supplied by COST0803 and SOTERIA
- the activity will take place from 18-29 October 2010 in the Kastler Lecture Hall and AGH Infolabs of ICTP.
- expected number of participants: 50 (determined by max capacity of PC labs at ICTP). These will come both from European countries (involved in either COST ES0803 and SOTERIA) and from developing countries.
- space weather topics: drivers (fundamental physics), impacts (applied physics and technology), monitoring and data handling & modelling techniques (research logistics). This is completely in line with the SOTERIA goals.
- Many of the speakers will be SOTERIA leading scientists and a guarenteed number of the participants will originate from SOTERIA institutes. During the European Space Weather Week [ESWW6] we will meet the COST representatives and finalise the program.
