Goal

Establish a PROBA2 SWAP and LYRA database at ROB.

Successes

A fully automated data-processing pipleline is essentially complete and functioning.

Exceptional Discoveries

N/A, pending PROBA2 launch on 2 November 2009.

Progress so far

ROB (Dan Seaton, David Berghmans, Elke D'Huys)

The software used to convert spacecraft telemetry to fully-calibrated, science-quality FITS files is nearly complete. The process, which involves the reformatting of telemetry into usable images or data timelines (in the case of LYRA), the consolidation of science data and metadata into individual Level-0 FITS files, and, finally, processing to complete data calibration, requires the use of several separate software packages, which, together, we refer to as the PROBA2 Data Pipeline. The pipeline has been tested on our local servers using sample data acquired during instrument and spacecraft testing completed on the ground. Although minor modifications are still needed to improve data calibration and better handle metadata concerning spacecraft position and orientation, the pipeline is essentially fully functional.

We have also developed additional tools that allow users to search for specific data in the SWAP and LYRA archives using a web-based interface. These tools are undergoing testing now. We are finishing work on alternate way for users to access SWAP and LYRA data, via the ESA's Virtual Observatory at ESAC. We have tested the PROBA2 Science Center-ESAC interface and are currently completing development of the database structures used by this interface.

Problem areas

Because PROBA2 is not scheduled for launch until 2 November 2009, and data acquisition by SWAP and LYRA will not begin until several weeks after launch, there are simply no data for the SWAP and LYRA archives at this point. We expect to begin normal science operations in January 2010, at which point we expect that the data archive will be fully operational and available to the public.

Suggestions for spin-off, collaboration or improvement

Data obtained by SWAP and LYRA will be made public and fully available as soon as it is received by the PROBA2 Science Center and processed into usable science products. We foresee many opportunities for collaboration between ROB and other SOTERIA institutions. Anyone wishing to use PROBA2 data as part of their research is welcome to access it via the data archive.
